In the early hours of Tuesday (19), a vehicle driven by Medardo Olmedo fell into a huge hole at the intersection of Campo Vía and Itapúa streets, in the Central neighborhood of Mariano Roque Alonso, on the street known as Pozo Favorito. The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m., when the pavement suddenly gave way under the car.
“I pass by here every day, but today this pit appeared. It’s a shame that a city so close to the capital is like this. In a year we won’t have any road left,” said Olmedo, who was unharmed. The vehicle got stuck and had to be removed by a tow truck.
Local residents say the asphalt collapse is related to the rupture of pipes from the Sanitary Services Company (Essap) and recent rains. So far, neither the city hall nor Essap has released an official report on the causes or responsibilities.
The incident sparked criticism of Mayor Carolina Aranda’s administration. “The mayor cares little or nothing about the city. She does nothing. It’s a shame,” lamented Olmedo, echoing the dissatisfaction of other residents, who denounce the lack of road maintenance and the risk to drivers’ lives.
