Asunción’s Historic Center saw an estimated 120,000 visitors during the two-day celebrations for Paraguay’s 215th Independence Day, according to La Nación. The event, organized by the Office of the First Lady, the national government, the Municipality of Asunción, and other institutions, transformed the capital’s core into a vibrant cultural hub.

The festivities centered on Calle Palma and the Cabildo, featuring a special edition of the Feria Palmear that stretched across four pedestrian blocks. Última Hora reported that artisans from across the country displayed traditional crafts such as ao po’i, ñandutí, and filigree, alongside modern food stalls offering everything from typical Paraguayan dishes to pizza, craft beer, and Mexican cuisine.

Music and performances were a highlight. The main stage in front of the Cabildo hosted a diverse lineup, including the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Ciudad de Asunción (OSIC) with singer Andrea Valobra, folk groups Las Paraguayas and Bohemia Guaraní, and rock band Paiko, whose midnight concert drew a massive crowd. Harpist Juan Cancio Barreto also earned widespread applause, bridging generations with traditional songs. Última Hora noted that a theatrical reenactment, “Rumores de 1811,” appeared several times along Palma and 14 de Mayo streets, adding historical context.

Family-friendly attractions included children’s play areas, pet zones, and animal rescue exhibits. The event also featured fireworks at midnight on May 15, marking the official start of Independence Day. Both sources agree on the large turnout and the festive atmosphere, with La Nación emphasizing the economic boost to local businesses and Última Hora highlighting the multicultural food and music offerings.

No discrepancies were found between the two reports. The celebrations are part of a broader agenda leading up to Asunción’s 500th anniversary, with additional cultural events planned in the coming days.
