Alert in Paraguay: Fake 'Bono Mujer' Scam Steals Personal Data via SMS

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (Mitic) issued an alert about fraudulent text messages promising a fake 'Bono Mujer' of G. 600,000, aiming to steal victims' personal and financial data.

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (Mitic) warned the population about a phishing campaign that uses the name of the Government of Paraguay to deceive citizens with the promise of a fake “Bono Mujer” of G. 600,000 for the month of May.

According to authorities, criminals send text messages with a link that directs to a malicious website, where victims are induced to provide sensitive data, such as identity card number, personal account passwords, credit card information, and electronic wallet keys. With this data, fraudsters can take control of victims' bank accounts.

Mitic highlighted that the fraudulent website uses the domain “paraguaybonomujer.org”, while all official government portals end in “.gov.py”. Additionally, the site requires the user to share the link with a certain number of contacts on WhatsApp to supposedly access the benefit — a practice that no government social program adopts.

The Ministry of Social Development also spoke out, classifying the action as a fraud that exposes people to risks related to their social media and financial accounts. The guidance is not to click on the link, not to provide personal data, and not to share the message.

Cybersecurity experts recommend always checking the URL of official websites, being suspicious of requirements to share links as a condition for benefits, and seeking information only through official government channels. In case of doubt, the population should consult Mitic's verified platforms or the responsible ministry.
