A 67-year-old woman died on Monday night, May 18, in Villeta after falling from the motorcycle where she was riding as a passenger and being run over by a large truck. The accident occurred around 7 p.m. on Route PY19, which connects Villeta to Alberdi.
The victim was identified as Deolinda Torres de Dick. She was riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by Evelin Catalina Pérez Núñez, 20. The truck involved was a Scania with a semi-trailer loaded with grain, driven by Luis Ángel Candia Giménez, 24.
According to police reports and those involved, the motorcycle was traveling on the shoulder in the same direction as the truck. At one point, the driver attempted to change lanes to enter a nearby residence. The truck driver reportedly honked to warn about the maneuver. The passenger was reportedly startled by the sound, lost her balance and fell onto the road, where she was run over by the heavy vehicle.
Commissioner Walter Romero, head of the 14th Police Station of Villeta, stated that officers found the victim already without vital signs. Forensic doctor Magali Enciso diagnosed severe traumatic brain injury as the cause of death.
Breathalyzer tests for both drivers came back negative. Despite this, prosecutor Fernando Melgarejo ordered the truck driver's pretrial detention on suspicion of negligent homicide. The motorcycle and truck were seized for forensic examination.
Police reported that the motorcycle driver did not have a driver's license. The stretch where the accident occurred is described as very dark and with heavy truck traffic.
